The Master of Arts (M.A.) in Teaching English as a Second Language is grounded in linguistic principles, language learning theory and empirical research on language learning and teaching. It enables students to teach effectively in varied learning contexts. Students gain experience through supervised practica and have the opportunity to teach in a variety of English-as-a-second/foreign-language contexts. Graduates are prepared for international teaching, adult education and literacy positions. The M.A. in Teaching English as a Second Language with the TESL Education concentration meets the above goals, while also preparing students as P-12 school teachers. Practica take place in schools, and students have the opportunity to teach in a variety of contexts. Licensure Requirement (not required for graduation): Admission Requirements
Official transcript(s); domestic applicants submit the GRE (general test) and international applicants submit the TOEFL; three letters of recommendation and a 1-2 page statement of purpose. The M.A. TESL degree requires 36 credits of coursework and students complete a capstone project with options of a 1) thesis, or 2) portfolio or exams. Program Learning Outcomes
