Description

PreMedicine/PreOsteopathy, a pre-professional advising program, provides students with an opportunity for further medical training after completing their undergraduate degree. Students take courses that prepare them for the Medical College Admissions Test (MCAT) and coursework in medical school. In addition to declaring this program, students must be admitted to a bachelor's degree program in the College of Arts and Sciences. Students who plan to pursue a bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry or Physics which have their own pre-medical/pre-osteopathy concentration, should not declare this program.

The College of Arts and Sciences offers programs for students who wish to pursue professional careers in medicine. These pre-medical programs are designed to provide a sound basis in biology and chemistry, along with coursework in physics and mathematics. The pre-medicine/pre-osteopathy, pre-veterinary medicine, pre-dentistry and pre-pharmacy programs are intended to prepare students for advanced, professional study in the medical sciences.

These programs meet the coursework requirements for admission to most medical schools. Students who wish to pursue a pre-medical program would be well advised, however, to check carefully the admissions requirements of the professional schools they wish to enter. Students also should seek advice regularly from their faculty advisors.

Students may pursue pre-medical programs under the Bachelor of Arts degree, the Bachelor of Science degree or a carefully designed Bachelor of Integrative Studies degree. The pre-medical programs serve as advising programs for students in the B.A., B.S. and B.I.S.programs.

Admission Requirements

Admission requirements differ among medical and osteopathic medicine schools.

General Admission for Freshman Students: Students most likely to be admitted and succeed at the Kent Campus are those who have graduated with at least 16 units of the recommended college preparatory curriculum in high school, who have achieved a cumulative high school grade point average of 2.5 or higher (on a 4.0 scale), and whose composite ACT score is 21 or better (980 combined critical reading and math SAT score). For more information on admissions, visit the Admissions website for new freshmen.

General Admission for Transfer Students: Generally, a transfer applicant who has taken 12 or more semester hours with a college cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 (on a 4.0 scale) may be admitted. An applicant who has taken fewer than 12 semester hours will be evaluated on both collegiate and high school records. For more information on admissions, visit the Admissions website for transfer students.

Graduation Requirements

Students should consult with a faculty pre-medicine/pre-osteopathy advisor each semester for assistance in choosing classes, the appropriate sequencing of classes and to ensure entrance requirements for selected medical schools are being met.
