Description

The Advanced Study in Library and Information Science certificate is an opportunity for librarians and information specialists to update and upgrade their professional skills. It is intended for those who hold an MLS or MLIS and are interested in expanding their skills in various areas of library and information science. Students may select elective courses that enable them to specialize in areas such as youth services, library management, cataloging and metadata, digital libraries, digital preservation, museum studies, information technology, and public services in different information environments. 

Admission Requirements

Domestic applicants must hold a master's degree in library and information science or information science from an institution accredited by the American Library Association, or a master's degree in a related field. International applicants must hold a master's degree in library and information science or information science. Students must have obtained a minimum 3.000 GPA in the master's degree. Applicants must have at least two years of experience since completion of the master's degree. Applicants should submit official transcripts from the institution of the earned master's degree(s), three letters of reference, a statement of career goals, and a resume. International students must meet a minimum English language proficiency requirement.

  1. All graduate LIS courses may be used to meet the requirement of 15 elective hours. Maximum 3 credit hours of LIS 50693 Variable Title Workshop - Library and Information Science (1-3) may be used towards the requirement of 15 elective hours. With advisor approval, maximum 6 credit hours of non-LIS graduate courses may be used towards the requirement of 15 elective hours. 

No transfer coursework may be used to satisfy requirements for the certificate.
