The Bachelor of Science degree in Photo Illustration provides the student with a comprehensive program of study balancing a liberal arts education with studio offerings in digital photography. Grounded in formal, technical and conceptual skills building, the Photo-illustration program focuses on the profession of photography as it relates to commerce. The School of Visual Communication Design's B.S. degree program builds a photography professional through experiential learning opportunities, as well as through required courses in graphic design and multimedia.
 

Photographers held about 136,300 jobs in 2012. Most of them worked in an around large cities. More than 1 out of 2 were self-employed, a much higher proportion than the average for all occupations.

Most photographers who work for someone else work in a photography studio. Newspapers, television studios and magazines also commonly employ photographers.

General Admissions for Freshman Students: Admission Requirements at the Kent Campus: The freshman admission policy at the Kent Campus is selective. Admission decisions are based upon the following: cumulative grade point average, ACT and/or SAT scores, strength of high school college preparatory curriculum and grade trends.

The university affirmatively strives to provide educational opportunities and access to students with varied backgrounds, those with special talents and adult students who graduated from high school three or more years ago. General Admissions for Transfer Students: Generally, a transfer applicant who has taken 12 or more semester hours with a college cumulative GPA of at least 2.0 on a 4.0 scale may be admitted. An applicant who has taken fewer than 12 semester hours will be evaluated on both collegiate and high school records. Students meeting the general requirements of the university for transfer admission will be admitted to the program. Transfer credits will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis. In most situations, completion of the VCD basic coursework is a necessary prerequisite to further study. The director of the School of Visual Communication Design may impose additional requirements considered reasonable and necessary. Transfer credits are evaluated consistent with the university policy, although each student will be evaluated individually in terms of his or her ability to perform within the program. A transfer applicant’s strengths and deficiencies will be considered and his or her transfer credits will reflect that consideration.

The School of Visual Communication Design recognizes that competence in visual design as well as intellectual capacity are necessary qualities in students who plan to prepare for a career in visual communication design. Therefore, the right is reserved to require evidence of achievement in design and related areas from all students endeavoring to enroll for the first time as majors in the school. Early admission is recommended.

Students with an interest in a program for which they are not qualified are admitted into the communication and information general category until requirements are met.
 

Minimum 126 credit hours. Minimum 39 upper-division credit hours. Minimum 2.750 GPA in the major and 2.500 GPA overall. Students must receive a minimum B- (2.700) in VCD 13001 before enrolling in VCD 23001. VCD 13001 may be taken a maximum three times until a minimum B- (2.700) grade is achieved.
