The Master of Science (M.S.) and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Biological Sciences—Ecology provides opportunities to study in areas such as animal behavior, entomology, limnology, microbial ecology, ornithology, systems ecology, systematic and evolutionary biology, environmental physiology, vertebrate ecology, and population and community ecology. Although courses of study are tailored to students’ interests and needs, the programs of all students normally include training in population, community, ecosystems and evolutionary ecology and statistical theory. Because of the interdisciplinary nature of ecology, students are encouraged to take courses in geology, mathematics, chemistry and other disciplines.
 

Admission into the M.S.: official transcript(s); 3.0 GPA; GRE (general test); goal statement; three letters of recommendation; list of up to five potential faculty advisors; before admission can be completed, a prospective student must be accepted by a faculty member in the ecology program who will serve as the advisor and undergraduate coursework roughly equivalent to a Biology minor.

Admission into the Ph.D.: official transcript(s); GRE; goal statement; three letters of recommendation; list of up to five potential faculty advisors; baccalaureate and a strong background in biology and related subjects such as chemistry and math. Deficiencies at the time of admission shall be rectified during the first year of graduate study. Before admission can be completed, a prospective student must be accepted by a faculty member in the ecology program who will serve as the advisor.

M.S.: Minimum 32 total credit hours.

Ph.D.: Minimum 60 total credit hours.

M.S.: A thesis and final defense is required.

Ph.D.: Dissertation and final defense is required.
