Managerial Marketing Major—2009-2010 Roadmap [Degree Requirements]

GPS

The Bachelor of Business Administration in Managerial Marketing prepares students to be marketing practitioners by helping them to fully develop the analytical, decision-making, and communications (written and oral) skills used and valued by individuals working in this field.  Faculty engage each student in active learning through hands-on assignments, case studies, projects with real businesses, and dynamic interactions with the faculty member and other students in the classroom.  Each course aims to strengthen writing skills by emphasizing logical flow, persuasiveness and succinctness.  Because coursework is sequential and integrated, each course builds upon prior classes to give students a comprehensive body of knowledge, skills and abilities.  The objective of this program is to educate students to function effectively in business environments (e.g., small firms) where they will have to make autonomous decisions and be required take action on their own initiative.

Students interested in a more broad-based curriculum in marketing should consider the Marketing major.

Requirements to be admitted as a managerial marketing major
Students are admitted into marketing major in fall semester only.

  • Admission of maximum 60 students into the marketing major each fall semester, using a target GPA of 2.50
  • Minimum C (2.00) is required in ENG 11011, ENG 21011, MATH 11010, COMM 15000 and MKTG 25010
  • Transfer students should read the college's Admission Requirements for Transfer Students

Requirements to graduate with a B.B.A. in managerial marketing

  • Minimum 2.50 cumulative GPA
  • Minimum 2.50 GPA in the major

The following policies are in effect for managerial marketing majors

  • The marketing curriculum is to be taken in sequence. Not all courses will be offered each semester. Students should read the Course Requirements for course sequencing.
  • Normally a managerial marketing major course can be repeated only once. Exceptions require the approval of the department chair and the assistant dean for the College of Business Administration.
  • Only three managerial marketing major (3/45000) courses can be repeated and counted toward the managerial marketing major. Exceptions require the approval of the department chair. All attempts will count in the computation of the major, upper-division business and cumulative GPA.
  • Students who do not obtain a minimum C (2.00) grade in MMTG 35011 will be required to repeat MMTG 35011 during the following fall semester to alleviate skill deficits, and they will not be eligible to progress in the major

Internship Opportunities

Marketing internships are an excellent source of real-world work experiences for students. Typically, an internship receiving 3 credit hours under MKTG 45292 requires students to work 12-15 hours per week for approximately 10 weeks in a marketing- related position. The responsibilities, supervision and training provided to the interns should be comparable to that which new college graduates in the organization usually receive. Grading is based on job performance plus a written report. With pre-approval, students may take MKTG 45292 to partially or completely fulfill the business elective requirement.
