The Education minor allows students pursuing a major other than teacher education to prepare for public school teaching. The minor provides the professional coursework necessary for graduates to seek a teaching license.

Admission Requirements: minimum 2.500 cumulative GPA. 

The education minor is restricted to certain programs. The following are majors for which teacher licensure may be obtained by combining the major with a minor in education:

College of Arts and Sciences

The minor in education is intended to allow students pursuing a traditional liberal arts degree to prepare for public school teaching. It is available only to students in those areas where the state of Ohio issues teaching licenses. The minor provides the professional coursework necessary for licensure.

Eligibility and Admission
The education minor is open to students pursuing a B.A./B.S. degree who are majoring in a teaching field such as American Sign Language; Biology; Earth Science; French Literature, Culture and Translation; German Literature, Culture and Translation; Classics (Latin); Mathematics; Spanish Literature, Culture and Translation; or Teaching English as a Second Language. The College of Education, Health, and Human Services does not offer single licenses in English or individual social science areas (economics, geography, history, political science, psychology or sociology); however, students majoring in one of those disciplines may be able to pursue licensure in the field of language arts or social studies. Students interested in a Social Studies license or Integrated Language Arts license should consult the College of Education, Health, and Human Services about that possibility.

It should be noted that in many instances the combination of requirements for the education minor and for the field of concentration in the B.A. or B.S. degree program may total more than the 120 semester hours required for graduation. In such cases, students should expect to complete more than 120 hours.

  3. Students in TESL take ENG 31007 TESL Pedagogy I (3) and ENG 41002 Computers in Second Language Teaching (3). Students in foreign languages meet this requirement through coursework MCLS 30660 Orientation to Second Language Pedagogy (3) and MCLS 40660 Methods in Teaching Foreign Language (3).

  5. Based on program requirements, credits may exceed the minimum required for the minor. When a difference exists between the two colleges' major requirements in teaching fields, students must also complete the specific major sequences required by the College of Education, Health and Human Services. This ensures that the students will meet licensure requirements.

Program Notes:

  • Those pursuing an education minor must be admitted to advanced study, prior to student teaching. For complete student teaching information, see Clinical Experience website through EHHS Undergraduate Student Services.
  • A cumulative 2.500 GPA and a 2.500 major GPA are required for advanced study, student teaching, graduation and licensure. All courses in the minor must be completed with a minimum C (2.000) grade. Some majors may have a higher GPA required, see advisor.

Licensure Requirement (not required for graduation):
Candidates seeking Ohio licensure are required to pass specific assessments in order to apply for licensure. See Ohio Department of Education-Educator Preparation website for more information on assessments specific to licensure type. Taking and passing the licensure tests prior to graduation is encouraged but not required.
