DESCRIPTION: | The Associate of Applied Science in Occupational Therapy Assistant Technology is offered at the Ashtabula and East Liverpool campuses. Occupational therapy assistants work under the direction of an occupational therapist to provide rehabilitative services to persons with mental, physical, emotional or developmental impairments. The Ultimate goal is to improve clients' quality of life and ability to perform daily activities. With successful completion of the program, graduates are awarded the Associate of Applied Science degree in Occupational Therapy Assistant Technology (OCAT) and are eligible to sit for the National Certification Examination for Occupational Therapy Assistants administered by the National Board for Certification in Occupational Therapy (NBCOT). The associate degree in the occupational therapy assistant program, Regional Campuses, reserves the right to initiate changes in the program as deemed necessary for maintaining quality education for the students. |
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES: |
Occupational therapy assistants held about 26,600 jobs in 2008. They worked in hospitals, nursing facilities, offices of other health practitioners, home health services, individual and family services and governmental agencies. Job prospects should be very good for occupational therapy assistants. Employment is expects to grow by about 26% between 2008 and 2018 as the demand for occupational therapy services rises. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS: |
Admission to the OCAT major requires the following: admission to the university; completion of the COMPASS test and, if necessary, recommended coursework; a minimum of 40 hours of volunteer time in at least two different occupational therapy settings; high school or college courses in algebra and general biology; and a 2.70 GPA. Students interested in the program should apply directly to the Ashtabula or East Liverpool campus and meet with the program director. Applicants not admitted directly to the OCAT program will be admitted as pre-major students. Detailed information and requirements for admission may be obtained from the Kent State Ashtabula or East Liverpool campus program offices. |
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS: |
Minimum 68 credit hours. Minimum 2.0 cumulative GPA and in major. |
