DESCRIPTION: | Advertising majors study the entire spectrum of the advertising business and the social responsibilities of a persuasive media. The major prepares students for careers in creative, media planning, account management, media sales, sales promotion and direct marketing. Typical positions for new graduates include junior copywriter, assistant account executive, assistant media planner or buyer, or assistant advertising manager. |
CAREER OPPORTUNITIES: |
Advertising careers include the creative elements of all kinds of advertising and promotional elements, including the strategic planning and execution of creative materials including print, broadcast and online; the planning and buying of all types of media including the ever expanding electronic media; account supervision, which is working with clients to help plan and execute advertising; and strategic planning and execution of direct elements, sales promotion and e-marketing. |
ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS: |
Students first entering the university, whether from high school or transferring from another institution, are admitted directly into one of the ten JMC majors/concentrations. A Kent State GPA of 2.75 must be maintained to continue taking JMC courses. Current Kent State students wishing to pursue a major in the School of Journalism and Mass Communication must have a GPA of 2.75 or higher to be admitted directly into one of the ten majors/concentrations. Current Kent State students with a GPA lower than 2.75 (but 2.0 or higher) may be admitted as journalism and mass communication pre-majors. |
GRADUATION REQUIREMENTS: |
Minimum 2.75 GPA cumulative and in major. Minimum 80 credit hours taken outside the School of Journalism and Mass Communication. Only general elective courses may be taken as pass/fail, of which maximum 12 credit hours may be taken as pass/fail. Students must meet the requirements stated in this catalog to declare a journalism and mass communication major. |
