Progression

Progression and continuance in the program is based upon successful scholastic achievement and personal qualities for the practice of professional nursing.

Calculation of Averages for Progression to Junior and Senior Sequence Nursing Courses

1. Students must have a 2.00 cumulative GPA each semester to continue in clinical nursing.

2. Progression to junior nursing requires the completion of 60 semester hours with a 2.00 or higher GPA; the
completion of all biology and chemistry courses as noted in program requirements with a 2.00 or higher
GPA; and completion of all freshman and sophomore nursing courses with a 2.00 or higher GPA in each
nursing course. In addition, NURS 10050 Introduction to Professional Nursing, must be completed prior to
    the sophomore nursing sequence.*

3. Progression to senior nursing courses requires the completion of 90 semester hours with a 2.00 or higher
GPA; the completion of all junior nursing courses; a 2.00 minimum GPA in each sophomore and junior
nursing course; and completion of BSCI 30060 Human Genetics, with an overall 2.00 GPA.*

*Students in the accelerated program take junior and senior courses concurrently.

Repeat of Clinical Nursing Courses
In order to progress in the nursing program, students must earn a C grade (2.00) or higher in all clinical nursing courses. Students who achieve a grade below (2.00) in a clinical course may repeat the course only once and may not move to the next academic standing level of course (junior, senior) until the course has been successfully completed with a grade of C (2.00) or higher. Placement for repeating any nursing course is only on a space-available basis.

Students who earn a grade less than C (2.00) in more than one clinical nursing course may not progress and are dismissed from the nursing program.

Failure in any two nursing courses (clinical or non-clinical) will result in immediate dismissal. This rule does not apply to NURS 10050 and NURS 20950.

Clinical Placement Experiences
All students are required to submit a criminal background check at the time of admission to the nursing sequence.

Graduation
The Bachelor of Science in Nursing is granted to students who complete the planned program of study with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.00 (C) and a 2.00 or higher in biology and chemistry courses, and a minimum 2.00 in each nursing course. Students also need to meet all other university requirements for graduation and complete a minimum of 32 semester hours at Kent State.
