Music Education Major

The curriculum for music education is one of the most forward-looking curricula in the country and includes work in jazz, folk, musical theatre and music of the entire world, while providing a strong grounding in western art music. The degree prepares students for licensure to teach music in kindergarten through 12th grade in any public school in Ohio and is recognized in most states throughout the country.  While receiving training in both areas, students specialize in the instrumental or choral/general concentrations.

With a student-centered approach to pre-service music teacher preparation, highly qualified faculty in music education strive to prepare teacher-leaders for the classroom, to serve their students, work collaboratively with colleagues, and lead their profession into the next decades of the century.

In addition to the School of Music professional standards listed above, each B.M. in music education candidate must meet the following requirements in order to enroll in upper-division coursework: pass an achievement examination to enter upper-division music education study; have  a 2.75 major GPA; clear all College of Education, Health, and Human Services professional requirements for admission to advanced study; and declare the education minor. Students seeking teaching licensure must be admitted to advanced study. Application for advanced study should be made at the Office of Advising and Academic Services, 306 White Hall, after 45 hours are completed.

A minimum cumulative 2.50 GPA and major 2.75 GPA are necessary for student teaching and graduation from this program. Successful achievement on the Praxis II exam is required for state of Ohio teacher licensure.

Special Notice: To enroll in upper-division professional education coursework, students seeking licensure must be admitted to the education minor in the College of Education, Health, and Human Services. Refer to that college section in this Catalog for specific information about this process.
