Entrepreneurship Major—2009-2010 Roadmap [Degree Requirements]

GPS

The Bachelor of Business Administration in Entrepreneurship provides students with the academic background and experiential opportunities needed to view business opportunities from an entrepreneur perspective. The program helps students recognize market and business opportunities, learn when to seize them or take action, while operating within the context of limited resources and creating value for the customer. The program contains numerous opportunities to experience entrepreneurship firsthand.  During their sophomore year, students earn course credit by launching and running a business of their own creation. A practicum course allows students to earn credit while developing their own business or assisting an entrepreneur with his or her business.  Students have many opportunities to meet experienced entrepreneurs who discuss their successes and failures in business. Courses in the major are hands-on, with experiential learning central to the course format.

Requirements to be admitted as an entrepreneurship major:

  • Admission of approximately 30 students each year with a minimum 2.50 GPA
  • Minimum C (2.00) in ENTR 27456, ENTR 27065 and ENTR 27075
  • A positive record of class participation and activity in the entrepreneurship courses, successful outcomes from the Entrepreneurial Experience courses, a personal essay and, potentially, a personal interview

Requirements to graduate with a B.B.A. in entrepreneurship:

  • Minimum 2.50 cumulative GPA
  • Minimum 2.50 GPA in the major

Entrepreneurship Minor

The entrepreneurship minor is available to all majors of the university. Entrepreneurship is more than a set of tools and techniques for starting and growing a business. It’s a mindset, a creative way of looking at opportunities. It’s passion, doing what one loves. Entrepreneurship is about challenge, persistence and creating wealth. It is about operating a business, whether one owns it or not. The entrepreneurship minor offers students the opportunity to explore entrepreneurship regardless of their academic major. This minor is designed to bring an entrepreneurial perspective to their major field of study. Students are immersed in the entrepreneurial process through coursework, entrepreneurial projects and exposure to many entrepreneurs in the community. Students are prepared for the various aspects of starting a business, acquiring a business, corporate entrepreneurship or working for a small business.

The minor is open to 100 students at any given time, with maximum 30 of the top applicants being accepted into the program each year. Students apply for the minor and complete a personal interview for consideration. The core competencies of an entrepreneur generally vary among high-GPA students. Administrators target emerging entrepreneurs who have the drive, ambition and passion to succeed. This does not necessarily correlate with GPA, but recognizes that education is critical to future success.
