Geology Major (B.A.)—2009-2010 Roadmap [Degree Requirements]

Graduates of the Bachelor of Arts program in geology have excellent opportunities for employment in a wide variety of careers where an understanding of natural science is useful or critical for success. Geology can be a strong background for advanced study or career development in areas such as business, city management, regional development, planning, law, journalism and science writing. Requirements include course3s concerning minerals, rocks, landforms, fossils, structural geology, geochemistry and field mapping, among others.




Geology Major (B.S.)—2009-2010 Roadmap

The Bachelor of Science program in geology is designed for those interested in a professional career in the field. The student must complete 50 semester hours of geology courses concerning minerals, rocks, landforms, fossils, structural geology, geochemistry, and field mapping, among others. Supplemental courses include introductory chemistry, physics, biology, and mathematics.  Students also select several upper-division geology electives that allow specialization in a variety of applied or theoretical areas of the science. The program features a  6-credit capstone summer field course in the Black Hills, South Dakota.

* Either BSCI course is recommended as a pre/corequisite for GEOL 34061.

** ACT math score of 18 or or MATH 11009 or MATH 11010 or MATH 11012 or MATH 12002 or MATH 12011 or MATH 12021 is the   
     prerequisite for this course. This course is a pre/corequisite for GEOL 23063.

*** Maximum 3 credit hours of GEOL 40096 may be applied to the 18 upper-division credit hours.

S/U graded classes may not be applied to the minor.

Minimum cumulative 2.00 GPA required for graduation.
